by Spirit (1970)

Released as a single in February of 1970, (not on an album until years later) this song inspired by Orwell's 1984 tells what complacency may lead to "14 years from tonight". Guitarist Randy California was born Randy Wolfe, but while playing with Jimi Hendrix when he was only 15 (and before the Hendrix experience), Jimi nicknamed him California because there were two Randys in the band and Randy Wolfe was from California - the name stuck. This video is one of Spirit's finest moments.
